Seva is work done without expecting anything back — and it is a practice in its own right, not a favour to the mandir. Sweeping the floor before aarti is sadhana.
Where help is needed
Laying the kund, arranging the offerings, setting out mats.
The fire does not build itself. Someone arrives early, lays the wood, arranges the offerings on the kund and puts out mats for whoever comes.
It is quiet, unglamorous work done before anyone else is awake, and it is among the most sought-after seva at this mandir.
Preparing prasad and cooking the festival meals.
Prasad every evening, and on festival days a full meal for everyone who comes. Both need hands.
No cooking experience is required — most of what is needed is chopping, carrying and washing up.
Sweeping, washing the floor, cleaning the lamps and the vessels.
Sweeping the floor before aarti is not a chore performed so that the practice can happen. In this tradition it is the practice.
There is no rota. If you are there and something needs doing, do it.
Meeting people who have come for the first time and making it easy for them.
Walking into an unfamiliar mandir alone is harder than it looks, particularly for someone who did not grow up doing it.
This seva is simply: notice the person standing uncertainly near the door, and go and talk to them.
