Guru Sanjay Nath wearing rudraksha malas, seated cross-legged

A practice

Khechari Mudra

An advanced mudra of the Nath tradition, given only in person and only after long preparation.

खेचरी मुद्रा

This practice is given at diksha. What follows describes what it is and what it does. The technique itself is shown in person by the Guru, never written down — that is how it has been kept for as long as it has existed.

Khechari is among the practices most associated with the Nath order, and among the most misrepresented outside it. It is a mudra involving the tongue and the soft palate, and its purpose is to change the way prana moves in the head.

Descriptions of it circulate freely online, often accompanied by instructions that range from useless to harmful. This page will not add to them.

What can be said

It is advanced. It follows years of prior practice, not months. It is given by the Guru in person to a student he has watched, and it is corrected in person as it develops.

If you have read about khechari and want to attempt it, the honest advice of this mandir is: do not. Come and establish a meditation first, and raise the question again in a year.
