A practice

Mudra & Asana

The gestures and postures that make the body a fit place to practise in.

मुद्रा · आसन

Asana in this tradition is not a fitness class and never was. Its purpose is narrow and specific: to make it possible to sit upright, still and comfortable for as long as the practice requires. A body that cannot do that will interrupt every meditation it attempts.

Mudras are gestures — of the hands, and in the advanced practices of the tongue and the eyes — that direct the movement of prana. They are simple to perform and easy to perform inattentively, which is the same as not performing them.

What is taught here

  • The seated postures, and how to reach one you can hold.
  • The hand mudras used in the mandir's own practice.
  • Enough movement to keep a sitting body from stiffening.

None of this requires initiation. Come to a session and learn it there.

What it brings

  • A seat you can actually hold
  • A body that does not interrupt the practice
